I would see this as a more sustainable way of growth.”</p> </blockquote> <p>She adds that businesses are often encouraged and supported to scale geographically; however, to stay true to the circular economy principles, they should reconsider how to measure growth or business success, focusing on local and circular trade more.</p> <p>Catherine further explains:</p> <p>“I want to stay local and not look for expansion. I`d love to be able to prove that you can sort things out locally and that you can get all your dairy products locally. Butter is a bit tricky as you need some sort of packaging, but finding a sustainable version is a top priority for Saltrock Dairy.</p> <p>This approach requires a long-term investment, expected to reach the tipping point in five years.</p> <p>Meeting regulations and managing paperwork was and still is the biggest challenge for them to bring their idea to life and keep it running. Image: Saltrock Dairy</div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--4246 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p>However, receiving a national circular innovation award allowed her to further invest in their model and keep working towards bringing it to the level where others can adopt it.</p> <p>The <a href="https://www.localenterprise.ie/Wexford/" target="_blank">Wexford Local Enterprise Office</a> has been a great supporter of their work, and through mentoring and financial incentives, they eased the process of running a small business striving to create value locally.</p> <p>To expand Saltrock Dairy`s reach in the region, Catherine is looking to collaborate with local cafés and shops, supplying fresh milk or placing mobile units.</p> <blockquote> <p>“People have been removed from the land now for generations, and in a way, drinking farm-fresh local milk is reconnecting with nature. Older people also remember the taste, and they might not call it a circular economy, but they know the benefits of keeping things local.”</p> </blockquote> <p>Engagement is highly important to Catherine, so she even visits schools, brings fresh milk, and talks with kids about where milk actually comes from.</p> <p>“I want to make an impact on food production and how people see the industry since we don`t pay the real price for agricultural products in general, considering the amount of work and resources invested.</p> <p>I would like to build consciousness around food production and ingredients in more than 7,000 beauty products and discovered that just 13 per cent were free from microplastics. When customers buy Holos Skincare, they get results due to the innovative ingredients we use, and they are secure in the knowledge they are making a more eco-conscious choice when it comes to skincare.”</p> <p>Niamh shares that there is a huge divide in the skincare space between what is considered ‘natural’, ‘green and ‘eco’ skincare and skincare, which is known as cosmeceutical, which is scientifically proven to benefit the skin.</p> </div> </div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--4273 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p>She says: “Consumers usually choose one over the other based on their own needs.</p> <p>Some value making an ethical choice, but when it comes to skincare, more value results. With this in mind, the consumer is no longer forced to make a choice because they get both - results and ethics.”</p> </blockquote> <p>Whilst Holos Skincare advocates sustainability and has embedded numerous purpose-driven initiatives, they are always learning and looking for ways to improve.</p> <p>Just as the phrase ‘green beauty’ is on the rise, ‘clean beauty’ has also become a trend over the past few years.</p> <p>Niamh says: “Clean beauty is not a term I like. I view it as another marketing buzzword rather than focusing on what amazing ingredients a product contains. Instead, it focuses on what it doesn’t contain and using the word ‘clean’ implies other brands are somehow dirty.”</p> </div> </div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph to look better than the next brand, but if you go all out on packaging and your product is only mediocre, the customer won’t repurchase your products.”</p> <p>She adds: “Refill isn’t a safe option for skincare, but it is a good move away from plastic for other wash and hygiene products.</p> <p>Ultimately, there is a lot of greenwashing within the industry, with big brands trying to hop on the trend Participants will also understand that they can begin with small steps.</p> <p>Companies can do many things, from becoming more waste friendly to actively reducing waste from daily operations and across the supply chain. Building a circular business model that supports the company`s daily operations require a clear picture of where they are now and where they are headed. It includes the essential step of considering customers’ needs, and creating a well-researched business plan that caters to these needs most effectively is vital.</p> <p>It is important to note that any plan should always have room left to adapt and improvise as per client needs. Green marketing and communication are pivotal when it comes to building a sustainable business.</p> <blockquote> <p>Unless you get the word out about your green credentials that you have worked hard on, the success of your business will be limited.</p> </blockquote> <p>You should find a way to be transparent and authentic in your communication while avoiding the pitfalls of greenwashing and building an honest relationship with your customers and stakeholders.</p> <p>Putting the pieces together is also easier when you can share your questions and doubts with others and learn from your For example, we transformed an area of wasteland which was near the distillery. It was full of all sorts of junk, and we turned it into a botanical garden and recruited several <strong>‘Social Botanists</strong>’ throughout the first Covid lockdown. There are about eight different botanicals and a special light in each one which helps them grow quicker. Also, when we make our espresso martini, we take used coffee grains from local coffee shops and reuse those to create this specific drink.</p> <p>Some of our other gins utilise many healthy materials, which we dry after making our gin and use in tea bags. If there is something we can’t reuse from our ingredients, we give it to local farmers for chicken feed.”</p> <p>They also run a return your bottle scheme where they give people a discount if they return their bottle and their stopper, andreuse these items rather than put them into the bottle bank.</p> <p>Viki shares why they have taken this unique approach:</p> <p>“Because we are called <p class="font-greentitle">Facing reality</p> <p>When I went to my first toy trade fair in Spring 2019 - Toy Fair in London - it was a sea of ‘made-in-China plastic.</p> <p>With a big smile on my face, I asked each of the 220 exhibitors what they had that was plastic-free. 200 of them thought and said, "Nothing," with a chuckle and a shrug15 had hand-made wooden toys shipped 22,000km from Sri Lanka, Thailand.</p> <p>Only 5 had anything at all that was made in Europe and plastic-free.</p> <p>The daily newspaper covering the toy trade show had headlines like, "Plastic fantastic", and there was no narrative at all about sustainability.</p> <p>I was really shocked.</p> <p>A year later, when we exhibited there, we were the only eco-specialist exhibitor.</p> <p>I went around asking my question again, but most exhibitors were still not thinking about sustainability at all.</p> </div> </div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--2074 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p class="font-greentitle">Playing with plastic</p> <p>Sustainability is far from being implemented in this industry since 90% of the toys are made from plastic and about 80% of them are made in China, creating a massive carbon footprint besides emissions from production.</p> Inside was a clipping from a newspaper of an article about our plantable experience gift cards.</p> <p>The message said "4 cards please" with an address and a €20 note to cover the cost.</p> <p>It was Because when people understand it, they will run with it.</p> <p>If it’s ambiguous and you are talking over their heads, they won’t be able to join you,” Nzerem explains.</p> </blockquote> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--1698 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p>Co-creation and collaboration are also key, she believes, in spreading and ‘championing’ your message.</p> <p>Sznyk believes that persistence and bravery is required in leadership to change the ‘business as usual’ attitude.</p> <p>“If we see the target, if we see the goal, if we want to make a change, we have to be persistent, because it’s not an easy way to go and we will have a lot of barriers, a lot of obstacles. But if we don’t give up too easily, we will reach it finally.”</p> <p>According to Marinovic, the traditional style of leadership needs to be replaced by a new mindset.</p> <blockquote> <p>“We need systems where we can all co-create, strive and move forward. A part of that is education, a part is methodologies, and another part is promotion and advocacy,” he explains.</p> </blockquote> </div> </div> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--bp-columns-two-uneven paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--1702 paragraph--width--full paragraph--style--42-58"> <div class="paragraph__column"> <div class="paragraph--type--bp-columns-two-uneven__2col-column1"> <div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--1699 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p>“I think we are all on a learning journey.</p> <p>We constantly realise the challenges we face and no one organisation or sector is going to be able to manage this transition alone, so I think collaborative leadership is crucial.</p> <p>There is an important role for government in this.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class="paragraph--type--bp-columns-two-uneven__2col-column2"> <div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-callout paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--width--full callout-style--b" id="callout-1701"> <div class="paragraph__column"> <div class="callout-body"> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--1700 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p>Bottom-up initiatives from citizens, communities, or business aren’t, in my view, going to be sufficient.</p> <p>We need the government to set the rules of the game.</p> <p>And we need the government to provide direction, to specify that strategic intent,” adds Torney.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--1703 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p>Governments can play a vital role in supporting the new business model in terms of policy and legislation, Torney believes.</p> <p>“Strategic direction. The session focused on ways to make the most out of your communication strategy to drive positive change and business growth and how to create a mix of values, transparency and sales.</p> <hr /><p class="font-greentitle">How Has the Pandemic Influenced Marketing Trends?</p> <p>The speakers were in agreement that the pandemic has influenced a number of marketing trends, and that will have a long-term impact on the industry.</p> <p>Rosemary Walsh, Marketing Manager for <a href="https://www.frankandhonest.ie/" target="_blank">Frank and Honest Gourmet Coffee Company</a>, says, “One observation is, I don’t think we’ve ever been bombarded by as much information as we are now and I think it’s more focused when you’re at home and online.</p> <p>Two things that I would highlight as a growing trend in marketing are <strong>authenticity </strong>and <strong>sustainability</strong>.</p> <p>I think these factors will be so important for everyone working in marketing.” Brand Manager for <a href="https://www.innocentdrinks.ie/" target="_blank">Innocent Drinks Ireland</a>, Laura O’Connell joins in, saying that, “Authenticity and the ability to cope with this situation goes beyond the usual thinking of creating good products; it’s about creating a good company which is walking the talk as well.</p> <blockquote> <p>This year has been scary and confusing. We’ve seen purpose become more important and actually the business of sustainability expanding out.</p> <p>It’s not just about the environment anymore, it’s about social justice, and the intersectionality of a lot of different issues”.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--1559 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p>She feels marketing is a brilliant tool for change because all of the marketeer processes are wrapped up in how we create change,</p> <blockquote> <p>so it’s actually an inspiring time in terms of looking at marketing as a tool for turning the tide.</p> </blockquote> <p class="font-greentitle">Avoiding the Perception of Greenwashing</p> <p>Eamonn feels there’s a risk right now for every marketer to do brand strategy around sustainability unless it’s clear that’s what your brand values are 100%.</p> <p>He thinks for the companies that are nervous about that risk, and that they should stop trying to figure out the big brand strategy around sustainability.</p> <p>Narrowing the focus on specific products as opposed to big brand ideas could be more a more effective step forward.</p> <p>Rosemary Walsh says, “We’re all learning and it kind of goes with our name, but for me, my advice would be, to be honest. Most of us are on a journey.”</p> <blockquote> <p>"The first thing that comes to my mind is focusing on one offer, one product, one plan, one thing that you have in mind. It might just be as honest as saying we’re not where we want to be right now, but this is what we plan.</p> </blockquote> <p>We do this in Innocent, and we talk about our journey to sustainability, our strategy for the next few years. The feedback has been fantastic.</p> <blockquote> <p>It communicates a serious message delivered with our trademark Frank and Honest humour.”</p> </blockquote> <p class="font-greentitle">Communications Strategy</p> <p>“I think there’s such value in creating a road map, you have your destination, and then the only thing I would add to that is to find your allies, build your crew and don’t feel like you have to do it alone.</p> <p>I have learned so much through partnering with activist groups and with different clients, learning from one another. How different people approached it and coming from the agency side, it’s beneficial I think for our clients to have someone whose got their ear to the ground.” says Costello regarding her experiences working at a marketing agency.</p> <p>In Laura O’Connell’s opinion,</p> <blockquote> <p>we need to focus on what you want out of a campaign and let’s face it, marketing people want to get sales out of campaigns. However, as large as the funding gap may be, there is some hopeful news.</p> <p>We can close the gap for less than one per cent of annual gross global product. For example, this could be implemented by closing the nature funding gap with what the world spends on cigarettes or soft drinks in a year.</p> <p>It’s possible that the gap could be closed with no new funding.</p> <p>Much of what we need is the better deployment of existing funds and smarter policy and investment choices.
