href="https://www.unep.org/plastic-pollution" target="_blank">19-23 million</a> tonnes of plastic waste leaks into aquatic ecosystems, polluting lakes, rivers and seas, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).</p> <p>As Vice President and Head of Plastic Waste and Business at the <a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/" target="_blank">World Wildlife Fund </a>(WWF), Erin Simon drives positive change across industries in packaging and material sustainability while leading one of WWF`s flagship campaigns, “<a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/pages/no-plastic-in-nature?s_subsrc=homepage" target="_blank">No Plastic in Nature</a>”.</p> <p>“Mount Everest. The streets in your neighbourhood. Tropical beaches on remote islands. Your local park. The Mariana Trench. What do all of these places have in common? Image: Canva</div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--4966 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p>Erin feels strongly about the power of collaboration and delivering justice as she explains that “our oceans don't adhere to country borders, and neither can our solutions - success for a few will not equal success for the planet”.</p> <p>The plastic pollution crisis is quickly reaching a tipping point, even though, in March 2022, the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) agreed to establish a legally binding international agreement to address the issue.</p> <blockquote> <p>“Despite voluntary initiatives and national regulations, marine plastic pollution has increased by 50% in the last five years and is projected to triple by 2040”,</p> </blockquote> <p>Erin explains.</p> <p>Crafting a treaty that will make a real difference requires strong and specific agreements that will hold countries accountable for building better systems for waste management and recycling while finding alternatives to plastic to avoid exhausting natural resources is at the top of WWF`s agenda.</p> </div> </div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--4967 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p>The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on Plastic Pollution will gather in late November to have the final negotiations, which, as WWF describes, is the “last critical moment to prevent irreversible economic, health, and environmental damage from plastic pollution”.</p> <p>On the promising side, some countries already recognise the importance of addressing the plastic crisis. For instance, Colombia, Jamaica and Panamá announced joining forces in 2023 through a shared initiative to reduce plastic pollution from coastal and urban environments by allocating $ 42 million to support a holistic approach to improve city-level circularity.</p> <p>Looking into the future, Erin shares her vision:</p> <blockquote> <p>“We need to design solutions for the future we want, not the reality we are in. I am not saying we don’t need to be grounded, but we need to think outside of today’s barriers if we want actual change.”</p> </blockquote> <p>One example she highlights where collaboration sparked real change is the <a href="https://www.businessforplasticstreaty.org/" target="_blank">Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty</a>, jointly convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF, where she managed to bring major companies such as Walmart, Target, The Coca-Cola Company, and Procter &amp; Gamble to the treaty negotiating table.</p> <p>She notes that many of these businesses are not only in favour of a treaty like this but have become vocal champions for it, helping grow industry buy-in, adding that “plastic producers are a large part of the problem but also a vital part of the solution”.</p> <p>An area where Erin sees a massive mindset shift is necessary is looking at the economics of plastics differently.</p> <blockquote> <p>“We often measure progress in dollars and cents – which is how our world works, but it also prioritises that and colours our ability to get creative. The question of “who is going to pay for it?” plagues problem solvers and deprioritises communities and ecosystem services that often bear the brunt.”</p> </blockquote> <p>In her opinion, to turn the tide and make a world without plastic pollution possible, a global treaty that provides rules for all countries to abide by and enables solutions like policies and funding that smooth the way for implementation would be essential.</p> <p>The role of advocacy cannot be overstated despite the fact that the plastic crisis is one of the most well-recognised global issues, and <a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/pages/no-plastic-in-nature?s_subsrc=homepage" target="_blank">85% of Americans</a> somewhat or strongly agreed in a recent WWF poll that plastic waste pollution is a serious and concerning problem that requires immediate political action to solve.</p> <p>As part of her work to raise awareness, Erin Simon takes the stage alongside other changemakers to share far away from business as usual. We are also in a unique position to create something entirely new, which can also provide learnings and data to other companies,”</p> </blockquote> <p>Neil says.</p> <p>He recalls that initially, they didn`t realise the magnitude of this project and all the positive `side-effects` that later justified their investment on multiple levels.</p> <p>“At first, it was more about land restoration and planting. In the past 2.5 years, he has worked with hundreds of farmers on land restoration and biodiversity projects.</p> <p>“I believe observation is the beginning of devotion – you have to see it to fall in love with something. In this case, once we can make farmers see what they have on their farms and understand the benefits, it can change their perspective, and they could become advocates for nature with an additional sense of pride.”</p> <p>Ray hopes that this specific project at the Easkey River will act as an accelerator by delivering tangible results, feeding into their work to restore 4000 acres of native land through facilitating natural regeneration.</p> <p>Although significant funding and dedicated resources will be needed to achieve their overall goals with the Wild Atlantic Rainforest project, the as the climate crisis escalates and global populations grow, we must conserve and protect water resources as we depend on them to ensure public health, operate food and energy systems, and create economic productivity with environmental integrity.</p> <blockquote> <p>According to the 2022 IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report, roughly half of the world’s population was already experiencing severe water scarcity for at least part of that year.</p> </blockquote> <p>With this special event, creating a giant symbol of peace, Elaine hopes to bring heightened awareness to <p>Therefore, they invite people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in this community event, enjoy a day out, and help with the beach clean-up while becoming part of the movement.</p> <p>Anyone interested in joining, only need to show up at 11.00 on Saturday, March 23rd at the Garrylucas Beach in County Cork.</p> <p>WiseWater also offers educational workshops for schools, community groups, and workplaces to raise awareness and inspire change by making a connection between our personal well-being and the preservation of water habitats.</p> <p>Some of their activities include investigating the water quality of local rivers or streams, organising `source to sea` expeditions and connecting communities to local wells through cleanups and discoveries.</p> <p>Their team has share: our mindset.</p> <p>How do we transition to a sustainability mindset?</p> <p>Dr Isabel Rimanoczy, author of the Sustainability Mindset book, identified 12 Principles for a Sustainability Mindset and created a framework that can be applied in higher education.</p> <p>She says:</p> <blockquote> <p>“If I were to name some of the characteristics of people who can generate change, I would heading with what I am doing now.</p> <p>"Having a sense of higher purpose, whatever it is for you, also helps you not just randomly react to life's demands but use this purpose to be your compass."</p> <p>Of course, there are other factors, but to be in a position to change something, you first need to stop and realise your situation.</p> <p>Isabel shares:</p> <p>"While we carry off the everyday things we need to get done, going through our to-do list, we are simply not suited to listen or learn.</p> <p>Being conscious about what is out there for us and how we behave and operate paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <blockquote> <p>I like to compare consciousness to a curtain that once you open, you cannot close again, and once you look behind it, you cannot un-see those things you find there.”</p> </blockquote> <p>They surveyed over 20,000 students about changing mindsets, and one thing that emerged is that once the shift in thinking happens, it brings the need to share this discovery with others so they wouldn’t feel alone with their new thoughts.</p> <p>This practically means that they start talking with their boyfriend, girlfriend, the <a href="https://smindicator.com/" target="_blank">Sustainability Mindset Indicator</a> (SMI) to help leaders map their current mindset concerning sustainability.</p> <p>This is the first instrument to map and profile where an individual is on their journey towards a Sustainability Mindset.</p> <p>The SMI is a questionnaire consisting of 36 bipolar statements, exploring three dimensions of our mindset for sustainability: the cognitive, the behavioural and the affective.</p> <p>It offers a personalised report that highlights the unique skills and opportunities to shape a better world.</p> <p>It also provides questions for reflection to expand awareness and leverage personal resources.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div><div the Doughnut Economics model, which seeks to balance human needs with the planet's ecological limits, adding that there's a strong emphasis on climate justice, ensuring that efforts to combat climate <p>What he also finds fascinating is Robinson`s ability to articulate the interconnectedness of climate change, social equity, and human rights and then mobilise action at both grassroots and global levels.</p> <blockquote> <p>“Mary Robinson exemplifies the kind of leadership that sees the bigger picture and acts with compassion and conviction, making her a true role model in sustainability energy</a>.</p> <p>Besides, new regulations are shaping the landscape as the EU Parliament and Council new rules are coming to<a href="https://climatejournal.news/news/eu-plans-to-ban-climate-neutral-and-other-sustainability-claims" target="_blank"> ban generic environmental claims</a> and provide consumers with better product information from 2026.</p> <p>All these changes seem to put too much pressure on companies, making them afraid to go public about their climate initiatives or plans.</p> </div> </div> <div Pole, a global organisation supporting companies to achieve net zero emissions, the majority of surveyed companies are intentionally keeping quiet, decreasing their climate communications, otherwise known as 'greenhushing', despite increasing investment in carbon management and climate action.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--4152 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <blockquote> <p>Data collected from climate-conscious companies revealed that 70 per cent of them admit to 'greenhushing', which is present across nearly every major sector worldwide, from fashion to tech, consumer goods, oil and even environmental Instead of making fun of daily life or commenting on day-to-day politics, they both explain scientifically challenging subjects in a hilarious way.</p> <blockquote> <p>The more I watched these shows, the more I asked myself if it was possible to give students the task of developing comedy scripts instead of writing seminar papers.</p> </blockquote> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--2997 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p>On this basis, with two assistants, Florian Findler and Angelo Spörk, we designed and continuously improved a course where students use humour by working in a group, creating scripts in the style of late-night comedy. To our knowledge, no one has tried this before.</p> <p>Within the scripts, humour is not used to make fun of serious issues. Instead, it is used to illustrate sustainability challenges in a scientifically sound and easily understandable way while raising awareness.</p> <p>In order to do that, students have to understand the basics of humour and comedy scriptwriting, need the courage to be funny and have the freedom of creativity while dealing with serious and rather complex issues.</p> <blockquote> <p>Many of them tell us that humour helps them communicate better about challenging topics in their peer groups and reach people who would otherwise not be interested in the subject.</p> </blockquote> <p>Students have created scripts that cover various topics such as the Sharing Economy, E-mobility, fast fashion, greenwashing, food waste, supply chains, and smart homes. </p> </div> </div> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--bp-columns-two-uneven paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--3003 paragraph--width--full paragraph--style--58-42"> <div class="paragraph__column"> <div class="paragraph--type--bp-columns-two-uneven__2col-column1"> <div> <div class="classy-style--margin-bottom paragraph paragraph--type--bp-simple paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--id--3001 paragraph--width--full" style=""> <div class="paragraph__column"> <p>A good punchline is surprising and reveals a more profound truth.</p> <p>Therefore, developing good comedy takes expertise because humour is more than just fooling around.</p> <p>Based on the experiences and evaluations of the three courses we already delivered, we learned a few lessons:</p> <ul><li>Humour is a craft and not a talent, which requires practising.</li> <li>Students better understand a specific topic by writing comedy scripts than by writing standard seminar papers.</li> <li>Humour can be integrated into courses that are not genuinely funny. Students reported that this approach helped them to boost their creativity and imagination.</li> </ul><p>Our experience has also shown that humour can point out grievances. It is an issue which prompted architect and researcher Marwa Dabaieh at <a href="https://mau.se/en/" target="_blank">Malmö University in Sweden</a> to develop an eco-cooling system.</p> <p>Air conditioning is the norm in Egypt, where Dabaieh tested her cooling system despite being very expensive to purchase and operate. This solution aims to keep indoor temperature and humidity low by using traditional ‘shisha funnels’ made of clay to construct a cooling system.</p> <p>The goal is to lower the indoor temperature by 10 °C by combining clay funnels, water, and the natural power of sun and wind.</p> <p>The experimental attempts so far have been promising. In a recently published scientific article, Dabaieh presents a reduction of the indoor temperature by 2 °C during an experiment in Cairo.
